A clean night guard stays fresher, lasts longer, and is better for your mouth. Here’s a simple daily routine and a weekly deep clean.

Once a week, soak your guard in a cleaner made for dental appliances, such as a non-abrasive denture or retainer cleaning tablet, following the package directions. Brush and rinse well afterward. If your guard has visible buildup, a short soak in equal parts white vinegar and water, followed by a thorough rinse, can help loosen it.

Keep it in a ventilated case, away from heat and direct sunlight, and out of reach of pets. Clean the case every few days too.
Replace your guard if it cracks, develops holes, stays discolored or smelly after cleaning, or no longer fits. Many providers recommend replacement every 3 to 5 years. See our night guard buying guide, or order a custom night guard from home.
It’s best to avoid regular toothpaste because it’s abrasive and can scratch the guard. Use mild soap or a non-abrasive appliance cleaner instead.
Avoid alcohol-based mouthwash, which can dry out or damage the material. Use a dental appliance cleaner instead.
Discoloration usually comes from plaque, saliva minerals, and staining foods or drinks. Daily brushing and weekly soaking help prevent it.
