At-Home Dental Impression Kit: How It Works and How to Get a Good Impression

An at-home dental impression kit lets a dental lab make a custom appliance without an office visit. Here’s how the process works and how to get an impression the lab can use the first time.

What Is a Dental Impression Kit?

A dental impression kit contains impression trays and impression material that captures the shape of your teeth and gums. A dental lab uses the impression to make a model of your mouth and build a custom appliance on it, such as a partial denture, night guard, or retainer.

What Can You Make From an At-Home Impression?

At FixUrSmile, the impression kit is included with every order. You don’t buy it separately.

How the FixUrSmile Kit Works

  1. Order your appliance online. Your kit ships within 24 to 48 hours with free shipping.
  2. Take your impressions at home following the printed instructions and our step-by-step impression guide.
  3. Mail them back in the box with the prepaid label.
  4. A licensed dentist reviews your case, and our US dental lab makes your appliance.
  5. Your appliance ships within about 3 weeks of receiving your impressions. See shipping and turnaround.

How to Take a Good Impression

  • Brush, floss, and rinse first, and take out any appliance you wear.
  • Practice seating the empty tray so you know where it goes.
  • Mix and load the material exactly as your kit instructions describe.
  • Center the tray and press straight up (upper) or down (lower) with even pressure.
  • Hold completely still for the full setting time.
  • Remove the tray in one smooth motion, without twisting.

A good impression shows every tooth with sharp edges, some gum tissue, and no large bubbles or teeth pushing through to the tray.

Common Impression Mistakes

  • Tray off-center, so back or front teeth are cut off
  • Moving before the material sets
  • Pressing so hard that teeth push through to the tray
  • Twisting the tray on removal
  • Leaving the impression in heat or direct sun before mailing

Are At-Home Impressions Accurate?

A careful at-home impression can capture the detail a lab needs for a well-fitting appliance. Accuracy depends mostly on following the steps: even pressure, no movement while the material sets, and a clean removal. Every FixUrSmile appliance is backed by our Custom Fit Guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do dental impressions at home?

Yes. Many dental labs, including FixUrSmile, mail an impression kit with instructions. You take the impressions yourself and mail them back, and the lab makes your appliance from them.

No. At FixUrSmile, the impression kit and return shipping are included with every appliance order.

What if my impression doesn't come out right?

Retake it before mailing if you can see missing teeth, large bubbles, or teeth pushing through to the tray. If you’re unsure, email a photo to info@fixursmile.com and we’ll take a look.

How long does it take to get my appliance?

Your kit ships within 24 to 48 hours of ordering, and your appliance ships within about 3 weeks after we receive your impressions.
