Retainer Replacement: What to Do If You Lose or Break Your Retainer

If you’ve lost, cracked, or outgrown your retainer, act quickly. Teeth can start shifting soon after you stop wearing one. Here’s what to do and what it costs.

Lost Your Retainer? Do This First

  1. Don’t wait. Teeth tend to move back toward their old positions after orthodontic treatment, so order a replacement as soon as possible.
  2. If you have an old retainer that still fits, wear it in the meantime.
  3. If your teeth have already shifted noticeably, or you have a permanent (bonded) retainer that broke, contact your orthodontist.

How Much Does a Replacement Retainer Cost?

TypeTypical cost from a dentist or orthodontist*
Clear (Essix) retainerAbout $50–$200 per set
Hawley (wire) retainerAbout $150–$300
Bonded (permanent) retainerAbout $250–$500

*Ranges reported by Dentaly. Prices vary by provider.

Retainer replacement: custom clear retainer made in the FixUrSmile US dental lab

A custom clear retainer from FixUrSmile is $145 per arch, or $265 for upper and lower, made in our US dental lab from impressions you take at home.

How Often Should You Replace Your Retainer?

  • Clear plastic retainers: about every 6 months to 3 years
  • Hawley retainers: about every 5 to 10 years
  • Bonded retainers: can last much longer, but need an orthodontist to repair

Replace sooner if your retainer cracks, warps, gets cloudy, or feels loose.

How to Replace a Retainer Without an Office Visit

  1. Order your clear retainer and choose upper, lower, or both.
  2. Take impressions at home with our kit. Our impression guide walks you through it.
  3. Mail them back free. A licensed dentist reviews your case, usually within 24–48 hours.
  4. We make your retainer from 1.0 mm clear, dental-grade material and ship it to you.
Important: a replacement retainer holds your teeth in their current position. If your teeth have already moved and you want them moved back, see your orthodontist.

Invisalign Retainer Replacement

Vivera retainers are the branded clear retainers sold through Invisalign providers. If yours is lost or cracked, you can reorder through your provider, or replace it with a custom clear (Essix-style) retainer made from new impressions.

A FixUrSmile custom clear retainer is $145 per arch or $265 for upper and lower. It’s made from impressions you take at home, so it fits your teeth as they are today. FixUrSmile isn’t affiliated with Invisalign or Align Technology.

If your teeth have shifted noticeably since you last wore a retainer, check with your orthodontist before ordering. A retainer holds teeth in place, but it isn’t designed to move them back.

Keep Your New Retainer Longer

Clean it daily, store it in a case, and keep it away from heat and pets. See how to clean a retainer. Many people order a spare. FixUrSmile gives you 15% off every second product automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a replacement retainer without my orthodontist?

Yes, for a removable clear retainer. You can take impressions at home and order a custom replacement online. Bonded retainers and cases where teeth have shifted significantly need your orthodontist.

How fast do teeth move without a retainer?

It varies, but teeth can begin to shift within days to weeks, especially soon after treatment. Replace a lost retainer as quickly as possible.

What can I use instead of a lost retainer?

If you have an older retainer that still fits, wear it until your replacement arrives. Otherwise, order a new one right away.
