Lost Your Retainer? What to Do and What to Use Instead

Losing a retainer happens to almost everyone at some point. The key is acting fast so your teeth don’t have time to move.

What to Do in the First 24 Hours

  1. Check the usual spots: napkins and trays after meals, bags, car, nightstand, and anywhere a pet could reach.
  2. If you have an older retainer that still fits comfortably, wear it at night for now.
  3. Order a replacement as soon as possible.
  4. If your teeth feel different or your old retainer doesn’t seat, contact your orthodontist.

I Lost My Retainer: What Can I Use Instead?

  • An older retainer that still fits snugly is the best short-term option.
  • An aligner from your last Invisalign-style step may help temporarily, if your orthodontist agrees.
  • Don’t use a night guard, sports mouth guard, or boil-and-bite guard as a substitute; they aren’t designed to hold teeth in position.

How Fast Can Teeth Shift?

It varies from person to person. Teeth tend to move faster soon after braces or aligners, so if you finished treatment recently, replace your retainer right away. See retainer after braces.

How to Get a New Retainer

You can go back to your orthodontist or dentist, or, if your teeth haven’t shifted, order a replacement clear retainer made from at-home impressions.

  1. Order online and we mail an impression kit to your home.
  2. Take your impressions using our step-by-step impression guide.
  3. Mail them back free. A licensed dentist reviews your case, usually within 24–48 hours.
  4. Our US dental lab builds your custom appliance and ships it to you.

FixUrSmile clear retainers are $145 per arch or $265 for both. Compare prices in how much a retainer costs.

A replacement retainer holds your teeth where they are now. If your teeth have already shifted and you want them moved back, see your orthodontist.

How to Avoid Losing It Again

  • Always put it in its case, never in a napkin.
  • Keep a spare set at home.
  • Keep it away from pets; the smell attracts dogs.
  • Pick one spot for it every night.
