How to Clean Partial Dentures (Flexible and Acrylic)

Daily cleaning keeps your partial denture fresh, prevents stains, and protects your natural teeth and gums. Here’s a simple routine.

Daily Partial Denture Cleaning

  1. Remove and rinse your partial after eating to wash away food.
  2. Brush it daily with a soft denture brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner or mild soap. Regular toothpaste is too abrasive.
  3. Brush your natural teeth and gums, especially the teeth your partial clasps onto.
  4. Soak overnight in water or a denture-cleaning solution, as directed, so it doesn’t dry out.
  5. Rinse before putting it back in, especially after a cleaning soak.

Cleaning Flexible Partials

Flexible (metal-free) partials can stain and are sensitive to harsh chemicals. Use cleaners made for flexible or nylon dentures, brush gently, and never use bleach or hot water. Learn more in our flexible dentures guide.

Cleaning Acrylic Partials With Metal Clasps

Acrylic partials handle regular denture cleaners well. Avoid soaking cleaners that contain bleach if your partial has metal clasps, since they can tarnish metal. Brush carefully around the clasps.

Tips to Protect Your Partial

  • Clean over a folded towel or a sink full of water in case you drop it.
  • Never use hot or boiling water, which can warp the fit.
  • Keep it out of reach of pets.
  • If it cracks, feels loose, or rubs, stop wearing it and get it checked.

How to Clean Partial Dentures: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean partial dentures with toothpaste?

It’s best not to. Regular toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch denture material. Use a denture cleaner or mild soap.

Should I sleep with my partial denture in?

Most dentists recommend removing partial dentures at night to rest your gums and clean the appliance, unless your dentist tells you otherwise.

How long do partial dentures last?

With good care, partial dentures commonly last several years, but changes in your mouth can affect fit over time.
