Upper and Lower Partial Dentures: Differences, Cost, and Fit

Upper and lower partials are built differently because each jaw is shaped differently. A lower partial denture leans more on the teeth around it, while an upper partial can rest against the palate. Here’s what to expect from each and how to choose.

How Upper and Lower Partials Differ

A partial denture replaces missing teeth on one arch (upper or lower) while your remaining natural teeth help hold it in place. The two arches have different shapes, so the designs differ:

  • Upper partials can rest against the roof of the mouth (palate) for extra support, though many designs keep palate coverage small for comfort and taste.
  • Lower partials sit in a narrower, horseshoe-shaped area with the tongue in the middle, so they rely more on clasps and remaining teeth for stability.

Is a Lower Partial Harder to Wear?

Lower partial denture: horseshoe-shaped flexible partial with no palate coverage
A lower partial has no palate to rest on, so it relies on clasps around your natural teeth.

Many people find a lower partial takes a little longer to get used to, because the tongue and cheeks move around it and there’s less surface area to support it. A precise fit makes a big difference. Accurate impressions help, so take your time with our at-home impression guide.

Flexible Partials: Upper vs. Lower

A flexible partial denture works the same basic way on either arch, but it holds and feels a little different on each.

  • Fit: An upper flexible partial can rest against part of the palate, which adds contact and helps it stay put. A lower partial has no palate to lean on, so it relies more on its clasps and on the teeth they grip. That’s why the health of your lower anchor teeth matters more.
  • Comfort: The upper partial holds better, but your tongue notices the palate coverage most at first. A lower partial covers less but can move more while you chew, which may cause sore spots until the fit is adjusted.
  • Speech: Sounds like “s” and “t” form against the palate, so upper partials usually affect speech more at first. Reading aloud for 10 minutes a day helps you adjust faster.
  • Relines: The gum ridge under any partial changes over time. Lower ridges often change a bit faster, so a lower partial may need a reline sooner.

Flexible nylon gives slightly against your gums on both arches, which often means fewer pressure spots than a rigid acrylic base.

Upper and Lower Partial Denture Cost

Partial dentures are priced per arch. At a dental office, partials range from about $300 to $2,500 each depending on type, according to Guardian Life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get upper and lower partial dentures at the same time?

Yes. You can order both and take impressions of both arches with one kit. FixUrSmile applies 15% off your second product automatically.

Why does my lower partial feel loose?

Lower partials have less surface area and more tongue movement around them, so a small fit change is easier to notice. If it rocks or slips, have the fit checked rather than using a lot of adhesive.

Does an upper partial cover the roof of the mouth?

Some do and some don’t. Many small partials use minimal palate coverage, while larger ones may need more for support.

How much do upper and lower partials cost?

Partials are priced per arch. FixUrSmile partials start at $245 per arch, and the second product is 15% off.
