Cracked Retainer: Can You Still Wear It, and What to Do Next

A small crack can turn into a sharp edge or a retainer that no longer holds your teeth. Here’s what to do right away.

Can You Wear a Cracked Retainer?

It depends on the crack. A tiny surface line that doesn’t change the fit may be okay short-term. But if the crack goes through the plastic, creates a sharp edge, or makes the retainer loose, it’s no longer doing its job and can irritate your gums or cheeks. Get a replacement soon so your teeth don’t shift.

Why DIY Fixes Are Risky

  • Household glues and nail products aren’t made for use in the mouth.
  • Patched retainers rarely hold teeth evenly, and the crack usually spreads.
  • Heating a clear retainer to reshape it can warp it.

A cracked retainer is best replaced, not repaired at home.

What to Do Right Away

  1. Check for sharp edges. If there are any, stop wearing it.
  2. If it still fits snugly and is smooth, you may wear it at night until a replacement arrives. Ask your orthodontist if you’re unsure.
  3. Keep the pieces or the retainer; they can help if you need to show the damage.
  4. Order a replacement quickly. Teeth can begin shifting when retainers aren’t worn.

Why Retainers Crack

  • Normal wear over time; clear retainers commonly last about 6 months to 3 years, according to Dentaly
  • Grinding or clenching at night (see night guard vs. retainer)
  • Heat from hot water, dishwashers, or a hot car
  • Removing it from one side instead of evenly
  • Chewing with it in, or pets getting hold of it

Replacing a Cracked Retainer

FixUrSmile makes custom clear retainers from impressions you take at home: $145 per arch or $265 for both. Keeping a spare set means one crack doesn’t leave you without a retainer. See retainer replacement and retainer cost.

A replacement retainer holds your teeth where they are now. If your teeth have already shifted and you want them moved back, see your orthodontist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay to wear a slightly cracked retainer?

A tiny crack that doesn’t change the fit or create a sharp edge may be okay short-term, but replace it soon. Stop wearing it if it’s loose or sharp.

Can you glue a cracked retainer?

It’s not recommended. Household glues aren’t safe for the mouth, and patched retainers rarely fit correctly.

How fast will my teeth move without a retainer?

It varies. Some people notice changes within days or weeks, especially soon after treatment. Replace a broken retainer as quickly as possible.

How do I stop my retainer from cracking?

Remove it evenly from both sides, keep it away from heat, store it in its case, and consider a night guard if you grind.
