How Should a Night Guard Fit? Signs of a Good (and Bad) Fit

A night guard should feel snug and secure without hurting. Here’s how to tell whether yours fits, and what to do if it doesn’t.

What a Good Fit Feels Like

  • Snug: it clicks or presses into place and stays put without adhesive.
  • Even pressure: gentle, even pressure across your teeth, with no single sharp spot.
  • Stable: it doesn’t fall out when you open your mouth or swallow.
  • Comfortable edges: the edges don’t dig into your gums, cheeks, or tongue.
  • Easy removal: it comes out with gentle pressure from the back edges.

What's Normal in the First Week

Some tightness, extra saliva, and awareness of the guard are normal for the first few nights. Most people adjust within about a week. Mild pressure that fades within an hour or so of removing it in the morning is also common.

What to Do If Your Night Guard Doesn't Fit

  1. Rinse it in lukewarm water and try seating it with even pressure from both sides.
  2. Give it a few nights, unless you have sharp pain.
  3. If it still doesn’t fit, stop wearing it and contact the maker. Never trim or heat a custom guard yourself.

FixUrSmile’s Custom Fit Guarantee covers fit issues reported within 30 days, with a free adjustment and, if needed, one free remake after review.

Should a night guard be tight?

It should be snug and secure, but not painful. Mild pressure the first few nights is normal; sharp or lasting pain is not.

Why does my night guard hurt my teeth?

Some pressure is normal at first. Pain that doesn’t fade after a few nights, or pain on one tooth, may mean the fit is off. Stop wearing it and contact the maker or your dentist.

Can a night guard fall out at night?

A well-fitting custom guard shouldn’t. If yours falls out, it may be too loose or worn.
